How To Remove Someone From a Group Chat on Instagram 2021

Earlier this year I decided to open an Instagram group chat for myself and some of my Instagram friends to vibe together, and this went well until one of my friends’ accounts was hacked.

We were not aware of this and the hacker sent scam links that another friend on the group chat fell victim to.

Once this happened I knew I had to remove the scammer from the group chat but the problem was how.

After much research, I was able to learn how to remove someone from an Instagram group chat and I successfully removed the scammer from the group chat and I will be sharing with you the steps you would need to take to remove someone from an Instagram group chat.

Instagram is undoubtedly one of the biggest social networking apps used with over a billion users globally. It is majorly a photo and video sharing app but has several features that make it interesting to use, features like Reels, IGTV, Instagram Stories, and more.

One of the other features the Instagram app also has is direct messaging(DM) that lets you send a private message to another user and an extension of this feature is the group conversation/ group chat feature.

Instagram Direct is an Instagram feature that lets you send messages directly to one or more people. You can send text, pictures, videos, Instagram posts, and many more.

The good thing about Instagram Direct is that it lets you send these messages privately without any other user being privy to it. Also, the media you share with other users through Instagram Direct cannot be shared to other social networking apps like WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. from Instagram.

If You Want to View and Manage The Messages You Have Sent or Received With Instagram Direct:

The Instagram group chat is another one of the interesting features Instagram Direct provides.

You might have been curious and wondered before how you were added to an Instagram group conversation and maybe you didn’t even know that Instagram had a group conversation feature in Instagram Direct, well, read on. I’ve got something for you.

What is an Instagram group chat/conversation and how do I create one

An Instagram group conversation or group chat is a feature in Instagram Direct that allows you to share messages, jokes, videos, pictures, and other things with a number of people at the same time. It’s like being in one room with a group of people where all of you share things that can be viewed by everyone at the same time as long as they are online and remain in the room(group).

An Instagram group chat could be designated for close friends, family, school stuff, and for any other purpose depending on the creator of the group.

A group chat makes it easier for you to spread information or share inside with a number of people at once rather than individually.

Creating an Instagram group conversation is quite easy to do, just follow these simple steps and you should have your group chat ready to go.

  1. Tap or
  2. in the top right corner of your Instagram Feed.
  3. Tap in the top right corner on the next page.
  4. Select 2 or more users you want to add to the group conversation, then tap chat.
  5. Type a message out, tap to select a photo or video from your library, or tap to take a new one.
  6. You can add effects, filters, and a caption from the options available if you choose.
  7. Tap Send.

Once you’ve followed these steps, your group conversation can start.

If along the line you decide to add more users and friends to the group conversation, you can follow these steps to do that:

  1. Tap in the top right of your Instagram feed.
  2. Tap the group conversation you want to add more Instagram users too.
  3. Tap the name of the group at the top of the page.
  4. Tap add people next to members.
  5. Search for the users you want to add and select their names
  6. Tap next if you are using an iPhone or done if you’re an Android user.
  7. Tap add ( for iPhone users) or ok (for Android users).

When you add new people to an already existing group conversation they will be able to view all the previous messages from the conversation but will be unable to see any media shared( this includes photos and videos) before they were added.

When you have all of this information and then decide to create a group conversation, add a bunch of your friends and registered Instagram users, you will need to give your group conversation a name.

To name your group conversation these are simple steps for you to follow

  1. Tap the new group conversation you want to name
  2. Tap name this group at the top of the page
  3. Type in the name you want and tap ✅ when you’re done.

You can also rename the group by following these steps

  1. Tap or
  2. in the top right corner of the Instagram feed.
  3. Tap the group conversation you want to rename.
  4. Tap the group name at the top of the page to edit it.
  5. Enter the new name for the group conversation, and then tap done in the top right corner of the page.

All members of the group conversation will get a notification whenever you rename the group chat.

Being in a group chat can be exciting because you get to communicate with several other people in the chat which can be very fun and informative.

However, the problem with Instagram Direct group chats is that anyone can add to a group chat. Yes, anyone! Even a user you don’t know or follow and can be very frustrating and annoying especially if you get several requests to join group chats you’re not comfortable with (so-called forex group chats or x-rated group chats).

But there is a way to put an end to receiving personal or group chat requests you don’t want.

To do this:

For personal message requests you receive

  1. Tap or your profile picture in the bottom right of your Instagram feed to go to your profile.
  2. Tap in the top right corner of your profile page and then tap settings which is at the bottom of the page.
  3. Select Privacy, and then Messages.
  4. Choose whether the message requests you receive from potential connections i.e. the people that follow you or other people go to your chats list (inbox), Message Requests folder, or whether to not receive them at all.
  5. It is important for you to know that you will need to accept the message requests in your Message Requests folder before they can appear in your inbox. The messages you receive from people you follow on Instagram will also appear in your inbox.

For group requests you receive you can choose any of the following options

Everyone on Instagram:

Group chats from an Instagram account you’ve already connected with will appear in your inbox straight away while the other group chats will be sent to your Message Requests folder first.

Only people you follow on Instagram

Any Instagram user you don’t follow will be unable to add you to a group. They will see immediately that you don’t allow everyone to add you to groups if they try.

Blocked accounts

Accounts you’ve blocked will be unable to send you message requests or add you to groups. Also, if an account you had earlier blocked is in a group chat you’ve been added to, you will receive a notification informing you of that before you join the chat.

Now that you have all this extra information, let’s dive right into how you can remove someone from an Instagram group chat without further ado and get you in the know.

How do I remove someone from an Instagram group chat

There usually is a purpose to which an Instagram group chat is opened, it could be to connect and have fun with a group of friends on a bigger and more engaging platform. It could be to share memes, stickers, and jokes, or it could be for spiritual, educational, or for other private purposes.

When the purpose for creating the group chat is consistently defeated or the protection of members of the chat is compromised, like in my case, you might then consider removing the offender. You can also choose to remove someone who is not and has not been relevant on the group chat for too long or someone who consistently makes offensive comments, jokes and regularly just causes trouble on the group chat.

However, one important thing to note is that before you can remove someone from an Instagram group chat you have to be the creator or an admin of that group. The admin of an Instagram group chat is the only one that can add or remove group members and also rename the group chat. Although, certain group chat settings allow non-admin members to add people or change the group name. But, it also is possible for an admin/creator of the group chat to make someone else an admin on the group chat if they choose to.

You can follow these simple steps to make someone else an Instagram group chat admin

  1. Go  the Instagram group conversation you want
  2. Tap on the information button  in the top right corner of the group chat
  3. Scroll down to the group members list and tap on the ellipsis icon

3.in front of the person you want

4.Tap on make admin from the options shown.

There is a limit to the number of people that can be added to an Instagram group conversation and the current limit is 32 people. However, this number fluctuates sometimes as Instagram makes changes in the group conversation settings and features.

You should also know that there can be up to 3-5 group admins in a group conversation on Instagram.

Now that you’ve settled the issue of being an admin you can follow these simple steps to remove someone from an Instagram group chat:

  1. Go to the Instagram group conversation
  2. Tap on the information button in the top right corner of the group chat
  3. Scroll down to the group members list and tap on the ellipsis icon in front of the person you want
  4. Tap on remove user from the options shown.

Once you tap on remove user, that group member is automatically kicked out of the group chat and can no longer participate in any way by sending messages, pictures or videos. Any removed user will also be unable to view new messages sent to the group chat, and the remaining members will get a notification alerting them of the removal of that group member from the group conversation.

In a situation where you think that the comments of the user removed from the page were too offensive to ignore and that they go against Instagram community guidelines, you can choose to report that message or user.

To report a particularly offensive message:

    1. Open the conversation in Instagram Direct

  1. Hold down the message until some options pop out.
  2. Tap report
  3. Select a reason for reporting the message.

The reasons for reporting a message include:

Spam, nudity/sexual activities, hate speech/symbols, violence, bullying or harassment, intellectual property violation and suicide/self-injury, you can also choose that you just don’t like the comment or message.

To report the Instagram user:

  1. Tap the search button at the bottom of your Instagram feed and type in the username of the person to look for the user.
  2. Tap on the user’s account to view their profile.
  3. Tap on the ellipsis icon in the top right corner of the page.
  4. Select report from the options you see.

You can either choose to report the account as a spam account or an inappropriate account.

Instagram is a great social networking app that allows its users to freely express themselves but it has also put in place features that let you deal with anyone that infringes on your rights or offends you with their comments or messages, from the remove feature to the block, report and other handy features.
